Past self: Wait, which past self am I.
Me: Uh... IDK. Maybe us who did the traveling back and reporting, from the fanfiction event. So about a year ago.
Past self: Oh. Got it. Ok, what's up, future self. (continues cutting up vegetables)

Me: *Time-travels back a year, slams door open and runs into kitchen* HEY PAST SELF GUESS WHAT you're gonna read part of your fanfic at a local event that celebrates fanfiction!

My past self: What?

Me: Yeah it's gonna be fab! Or not. We'll see what happens. This is still in the future, for me.

Past self: Wait, what's going on?

Me: Oh, I guess I should backtrack. You're gonna write a fanfic, a few months from now.... Wild, right? First one since teen years.

Past self: No, I mean, who are you and what are you doing in my kitchen.

Me: I'm you. I time-traveled back one solar year to deliver this news.

Past self: ..... Okay... Uh, you wanna tell me other stuff, maybe? Like, what's happening with the world?

Me: Oh. IDK, uh, Trump is still prez, Brexit's been pushed back, and people are concerned about Roe v Wade being overturned in the US.

Past self: How is any of this different from now? Also, Roe v Wade has been a concern since the 2016 election among women's rights groups, student groups and other groups I've known.

Me: Yeah things kind of got worse. Oh, but there's some large-scale actual work happening with inequality and climate change, I think. Also... you will have a tomato plant.

Past self: A tomato plant.

Me: Just trying to end it on a cheery note.

Past self: Wait, that's all you're going to tell me, regarding the future? Fanfiction and a tomato plant? And some policy stuff?

Me: That's what I feel like talking about. Alright, past self, PEACE! See you on the flip side!

Past self: What! Hang on, if you're going to leave while being vague and not very useful -- can you at least, like, take the recycling on your way out? You know where it goes outside.

Me: Uh... fine, yeah, okay. PEACE OUT! STAY AWESOME! *grabs recycling and leaves*

Past self: You too, self, you too.

FsoV was originally written in the fall of 2018, which is the context when characters in the story reference Brexit and the state of the U.S.

After finishing the story, I left it alone for a few months.

Around February 2019, the impending Brexit development may (or may not) have caused me to say, “I'm not sure what's happening with the UK, but maybe I should edit and post that fanfic before the Brexit references in it become completely outdated.”


(PS It's the end of March 2019 right now. IDK how much the opinion of an American citizen means to anyone, but I really hope y'all in the UK don't do Brexit.)
