I didn't know how "returnee students" felt either! There's so much variations in cultures and how people feel about themselves.

Third culture kids is a whole interesting area. I read a book about TCK a few years ago (I think it was 'Third Culture Kids: Growing Up Among Worlds') and did some research into TCK. While I don't really identify as a TCK, I know some people who would be "oh yeah that's me". It's interesting to explore how people identify or use the term.

I kind of thought the book was a bit gloomy and fatalistic about some aspects of TCK. Another ex-pat I was talking to thought so too. But since neither of us are really in the Third Culture Kid area, I'd be interested to hear opinions from someone who recognizes themselves in the book.

I heard that "returnee students" or "Kikokushijo" are a in-vogue trope in manga, apparently replacing "hafu" characters (JP term for mixed race people, often White American / Japanese, not my fav term). I suspect manga creators are playing fast and loose and getting stuff wrong with Kikokushijo characters, as much as they're weird about mixed race characters. (This is speculation.) Anyway, it's nice to see an actual interview with a returnee student.
